UNISON Northern is running a climate change project around COP26 for a limited number of young members. The project includes travelling to Glasgow for one day to attend some of the COP26 activity. Participants will also play a role in our climate change work going forwards. We encourage any interested young members to apply here. Please note the deadline of 18 October 2021.
The project will involve developing an understanding about climate change, how we tackle it, the political context including COP26, the role of UNISON and what we can do.
You do not need any specific knowledge about climate change to participate. However we are asking for a commitment to:
Participation in two teams calls before 6 November – suggested dates Tuesday 26 October and Tuesday 2 November
Saturday 6 November attendance at climate mobilisation in Newcastle if possible
Monday 8 November availability all day to visit Glasgow by train (costs covered by UNISON)
Participation in follow up action and a commitment to working on climate change in branch/workplace
All costs are covered by UNISON. If you have any questions or would like further information please contact n.region@unison.co.uk.
Background information
Tackling climate change is one of UNISON’s key objectives. It is a core issue for our members, in both workplaces and communities. At special delegates conference this year members agreed that any real recovery from the pandemic must involve the creation of a green and sustainable economy – one that includes public service workers at its heart.
All eyes are now on the United Nations Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP26), in Glasgow in November 2021 where key decisions will be made by world leaders on the commitments to tackling climate. For more information on the importance of COP26 please see our regional blog. UNISON is part of the COP26 coalition, an organising group of civil society around COP26. UNISON is committed to mobilising members around these talks. .
Best wishes
